COLLECTED,
NOT DECORATED

The Shepherds Farm has never worked that way. Provence Lodge came first, then Western Farmhouse, the Tuscan Barn, the gardens and the Walled Potager. The Nordic Stables will follow. Each new part has changed the way the others are used. A path acquires a destination; a kitchen begins to serve a table beyond its own doors; an object found for one room suggests the mood of another. The estate has grown by addition, adjustment and the occasional change of mind.

Francis lived at the Farm before it became the place guests know today. That time matters. It meant noticing where the morning light fell, where people naturally left their boots and which corner still held the evening sun. The same kind of observation shaped the interiors. A room was not asked to look complete in a photograph. It had to become somewhere people would choose to remain..

Collected, not decorated is the simplest way to describe the result. It does not mean that choices are casual. It means that a room is allowed to carry more than one time, place or hand. An old piece can sit beside something made specifically for the Farm. Belgian craftsmanship meets a textile found elsewhere. Timber, stone, zinc and terracotta are chosen partly for the way they will change. The useful and the beautiful are rarely kept far apart

In Provence Lodge, cupboards made from old railway boards turn the mudroom into the practical beginning of the house. Terracotta plates and pots bring the warmth of southern France inside, including great painted vessels whose vegetables quietly point towards the Potager beyond the wall. In Western Farmhouse, deeper colours, generous fabrics and a trace of the American West make the rooms feel relaxed rather than arranged. The Tuscan Barn takes the earthiness of terracotta and gives it a bolder, more theatrical scale.
These references are influences, not costumes. Provence is not reproduced in Belgium, nor is Tuscany, Scandinavia or Colorado. Flanders holds everything together: the brick, the agricultural forms, the changing light and the understanding that a country house should withstand weather, muddy shoes and a full table. Ralph Lauren has long been one of Francis’s reference points for a similar reason. The interest lies in the ability of a room, a garment or a well-worn object to suggest a way of living, rather than a look to copy.
A collected house leaves room for the people staying in it.

Jean-Philippe Demeyer has helped give this instinct form. The collaboration is built on conversation and a shared appetite for colour, scale and combinations that do not reveal themselves at once. Elsewhere, Prince of Sun made the ceramic piece above the fireplace in Western Farmhouse, drawing on forms that seem part coral, part plant and part imagined creature. A new ceramic water element for the Walled Potager will continue that conversation outdoors.
The word collaboration is used sparingly at the Farm. Supplying a beautiful object is not the same as shaping the place. The people included are those whose ideas have altered a room, a material or the way something is made.
Patina is welcome, though neglect is not. There is a difference. A table may record where glasses have stood; a brass fitting will soften under the hand; linen relaxes; terracotta takes on depth. These changes are evidence that the house is being lived in. They give the next guest something warmer than perfection.
A collected house also leaves room for memory. Someone returns to the same chair by the fire or reaches without thinking for the cup they used last time. Children remember the bunk room. Friends recognise the corner where a long conversation began. The objects keep their own histories, and gradually make space for those of the people who stay among them.
